JOLIET – Police arrested a 15-year-old boy for allegedly stealing a semi-automatic handgun from his own mother, taking the pistol out of the family safe, authorities said.

On Monday, the boy’s 38-year-old mother, who lives with him in the 1700 block of Arden Place, reported to police that her semi-automatic handgun was missing, said Joliet Deputy Police Chief Ed Gregory.

An officer went to the home and found the teenage son in the basement, Gregory said. The officer then recovered the loaded semi-automatic handgun that was allegedly stolen from the family safe, he said.

The boy was arrested and taken to River Valley Juvenile Detention Center. He faces charges of theft and the unlawful use of a weapon.
