JOLIET – A Joliet man was allegedly insistent on stealing a carton of Newport cigarettes from Thorntons gas station.

On Sunday and Tuesday, Thomas L. Floyd, 36, of the 2300 block of Orchard Lane, went into Thorntons, 2798 W. Jefferson St., and allegedly took a carton of Newport cigarettes before fleeing the scene.

When Floyd made his alleged theft Sunday, a clerk followed him into the parking lot of the gas station and saw him get into a small black car before leaving, said Joliet Police Deputy Chief Ed Gregory.

Following a police investigation, Floyd was positively identified in video footage from the gas station and the clerk.

He was charged with retail theft and taken to the Will County jail. Floyd also faces a charge of theft over $500 but less than $10,000 from an incident on July 24, according to court records.

Floyd's bond was set at $75,000 Wednesday. As a condition of his bond, he is to have no contact with a woman or a home in the 2300 block of Orchard Lane.
