JOLIET – Three teenagers were allegedly driving around Joliet in a car stolen out of Chicago, police said.

A 15-year-old boy was allegedly driving a stolen silver 2002 Monte Carlo with a 16-year-old friend in the front passenger seat and another 15-year-old boy in the rear seat, said Joliet Deputy Police Chief Ed Gregory.

The car they were driving was seen by officers after 10:30 p.m. Tuesday in the area of Jackson and Collins streets, he said. The officers looked up the car’s license plate and learned it was stolen out of Chicago.

The officers followed the vehicle to the 900 block of Royce Avenue and conducted a traffic stop.

However, the driver and the front passenger fled the scene, leaving behind their friend in the rear seat who remained on the scene and was released by police to his guardian, Gregory said.

The other two were captured by police in the same block of Royce Avenue.

The 16-year-old was charged with obstructing a police officer, possession of drug equipment and motor vehicle theft. The 15-year-old was charged with obstructing a police officer and motor vehicle theft.

Both were taken to River Valley Juvenile Detention Center.
