Semi-truck driver from Joliet dies after truck goes off road near Michigan City, Indiana

A 66-year-old Joliet man died Wednesday after his semi-truck veered off Interstate 94 in Indiana.

Howard Pruitt, of Joliet, left a weigh station off I-94 near Michigan City, Indiana, driving a red Freightliner semitrailer and continued east on the interstate around 1:40 p.m. Wednesday, according to a news release from the Porter County Coroner’s Office.

Roughly five miles from the weigh station, at mile marker 32, the semi drove off the road, into the south ditch and came to a rest. The truck did not appear to be damaged, and Pruitt did not appear to be injured. No other vehicles were involved in the crash.

Indiana State Police and Porter EMS treated Pruitt on the scene, but he died while being transported to Porter Regional Hospital in Valparaiso, Indiana.

An autopsy was set to be performed Thursday morning.
