One Troy Middle School seventh grade student and five eighth-grade students have been selected to participate in the All-Illinois Junior Band at the University of Illinois in January.

According to Troy Community School District 30-C band director William Goetz, Myles Shackelford, percussion, is the seventh-grade student selected for the band.

Eighth-graders are Abigail Athern, trumpet; Lauren Gans, tenor saxophone; Nathan Hunsaker, trombone; Ellen Lundeen, horn; and Alexander MacGregor, tuba. Alternates are eighth-graders Jessica Meza, flute, and Jacob Richardson, baritone saxophone.

The All-Illinois Junior Band was founded to create a premier musical experience for the state’s finest middle school band students. Its goals are to provide an opportunity for the students to perform excellent literature with a mature ensemble and distinguished conductor and to inspire them to continue their studies.

Guest conductor of the 2018 All-Illinois Junior Band will be Andrew Boysen Jr., a professor in the music department at the University of New Hampshire and a composer. The band will rehearse and perform Jan. 12 and 13 at the University of Illinois Krannert Center for the Performing Arts.
