Area roundup: Favorites prevail in girls basketball regional semifinals

Girls basketball regionals involving Joliet area schools rolled into semifinal play Tuesday night, and for the most part, favorites prevailed.

In Class 3A at the Bishop McNamara Regional, the top-seeded Shamrocks ended the season for young Joliet Catholic Academy, 67-42. The No. 8 Angels had reached that game when they whipped No. 10 Manteno, 54-21, on Monday night. In that game, Mia Bertino (21 points, two steals), Kendall McLeod (seven points, six rebounds, three steals) and Morgan Furmaniak (five steals) led the Angels.

At the 3A Herscher Regional, Morris dropped a 45-35 decision to Herscher.

In Class 4A, top seed Bolingbrook breezed to a 67-40 semifinal victory over Waubonsie Valley to advance to the Bolingbrook Regional title game Thursday night against No. 9 Plainfield North, which ousted No. 8 Joliet West, 60-49. West’s Sarah Gersch went over the 1,000-point mark for her career.

In 4A at the Lincoln-Way East Regional, the top-seeded Griffins were all over Thornton, 59-34, and will meet Crete-Monee, a 43-38 winner over Stagg, on Thursday night for the championship. Meanwhile, the Lincoln-Way Central season ended in a 59-28 loss to Homewood-Flossmoor at the Sandburg Regional.

BOYS BASKETBALL

JCA 52, Coal City 49: The Coalers led 23-9 after one quarter, 31-19 at halftime and 40-32 after three quarters but the Hilltoppers (7-18) refused to quit. They outscored the visitors, 20-9, in the final quarter to make senior night a success. Sean Micetich scored 23 points for Coal City.

Morris 39, Kaneland 37: Tyler Spiezio had 14 points and eight rebounds and Kam Dransfeldt and Payton Voitik each chipped in six points for the Redskins.

Lemont 55, Oak Park River Forest 31: Nate Ferguson scored 17 and Paul O’Leary 16 for Lemont.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Kelliher recognized again: Lewis junior forward Jessica Kelliher was named GLVC Player of the Week. It’s the fourth time in six weeks that Kelliher has won the award, the sixth time this season and 12th in her career. In two games last week, Kelliher averaged 30 points, 11 rebounds, 4.5 steals, three blocked shots and three assists. She shot 72 percent (28-for-39) for the week, including 77 percent (17 for 22) against Wisconsin-Parkside. She matched her season-high with 37 points and made a season-high 17 field goals against the Rangers.

Brefford honored: Joliet Junior College sophomore Deesha Brefford was named Region IV Player of the Week in Division III. Brefford scored 30 points and had six steals in an 85-58 win over Milwaukee Area and totaled 36 points, eight rebounds, seven assists and five steals in a 110-55 win over Wright. She shot 59 percent on 29 of 49.
