A Joliet man allegedly slammed his car into a man and then slashed him with a knife while he was on the ground, police said.

About 11:40 p.m. Friday, Keith A. Godsey, 52, of the 200 block of Rowell Avenue was arrested and charged with aggravated battery in connection with the alleged attack.

A 38-year-old man was speaking with a 22-year-old man inside a gas station in Joliet when Godsey allegedly entered the store and got into a verbal altercation with the 38-year-old man, Joliet Deputy Police Chief Ed Gregory said. The 22-year-old man said that Godsey threatened to punch the 38-year-old man in the face, Gregory said.

The 38-year-old man said he left the gas station and entered the parking lot of the Walgreens at 2101 W. Jefferson St. when he heard tires screeching and saw a red car coming toward him.

Gregory said the man said the car struck him in the back and he was thrown in the air, and was attacked by Godsey while he lay on the ground.

Officers later found Godsey at the Star Inn Motel and arrested him. The officers searched him and found a knife. The 38-year-old man had suffered injuries to the left side of his head and lower back, along with lacerations to his hands, Gregory said.

The 22-year-old man said he saw Godsey punch the other man in the face and make a slashing motion toward him while he was on the ground.

Godsey was taken to the Will County jail and later appeared at a bond court hearing Tuesday where he pleaded not guilty to the charge.
