A 14-year-old was arrested for possessing a handgun, police said.

About 7:30 p.m. Thursday, the teenager was arrested by Joliet police at the corner of Washington and Union streets. A warrant had been issued for the teenager’s arrest on a charge of unlawful possession of a handgun by someone younger than age 18.

Officers saw the teenager in the 200 block of Herkimer Street riding in a tan Chevrolet Equinox, Joliet police Sgt. Darrell Gavin said in an email. The officers were aware the teenager was listed as having a valid Will County warrant for his arrest.

The officers made a traffic stop of the car he was riding in at Washington and Union streets. Gavin said the teenager was arrested without incident, booked and then taken to River Valley Juvenile Detention Center.

Drug arrests

On Thursday evening, Alec M. Gwin, 27, of the 200 block of South Avenue, Lockport, and Dwayne R. Rembert Jr., of the 3600 block of West 55th Street, Chicago, both were arrested and charged with possession of a controlled substance and criminal trespass to land.

Officers responded to a call of two people loitering in a car in a parking lot in the 300 block of North Broadway, Gavin said. When the officers arrived, they spoke with the two men, who said they did not have a pass to be on the property.

Gavin said the parking lot has a valid trespass agreement with the city.

When officers asked for identification, Gwin stepped from the car and an officer noticed a white powdery substance on the inside of the car’s floorboard. An officer also saw drug paraphernalia inside the car.

After Rembert was asked to exit the car, the officers searched the vehicle to recover the substance, which tested positive for cocaine.

Both men were jailed.
