Area roundup: 14 boys golfers advance to state finals

One team and eight individuals will be competing in the three boys golf state finals, which will be held in Bloomington-Normal this weekend.

Of the 14 state competitors, 12 will be taking part in the Class 3A finals, which will be at The Den at Fox Creek Golf Course.

The lone team to qualify is Lockport, which will be making its first state trip since 2006. Members of coach Matt Eber’s Porters are seniors Eric Gasienica and brothers John and Nolan Weis, sophomores VJ Greci and Ben Sluzas and freshman Brody McCarthy.

Lincoln-Way Central will be represented by senior Brian Sterling, sophomore Sean Curran and freshman Juney Bai.

Other area qualifiers are Joliet Township senior Brandyn Collins, Minooka senior Dylan Pfieffer and Providence Catholic senior Joey Utz.

Lemont freshman Paulius Malcius will compete in the Class 2A finals at the Weibring Golf Club at Illinois State University.

Seneca junior Brett Yegge is the only golfer that advanced to the Class 1A state finals at Prairie Vista Golf Course.


Minooka 25-25, Romeoville 19-20: Leading the Indians were Desi Anderson (six kills), Zoey Seput (27 assists, nine digs), Bella Alessio (10 kills) and Nicole Kijowski (15 digs).

Joliet Catholic 25-25, Southland Prep 7-14: The Angels were paced by Emily Holbrook (five aces), Molly Hibner (four kills), Bella Ray (four kills) and Jillian Gray (four kills).

Lincoln-Way Central 25-25, Thornwood 14-11: The Knights were led by Dani Lauer (seven aces, seven kills), Nicole Ramirez (20 assists) and Layne Stevens (six kills).

Sandburg 25-25, Lockport 20-22: The Porters were paced by Taylor Morgan (six kills), Leena Ajibola (4.5 blocks), Jill Hook (14 digs) and Hannah Pacheco (12 assists).


Lincoln-Way Central 3, Stagg 1: Conor Erickson had two goals and an assist, Sam Gorecki also scored a goal and goalkeeper Adam Kedzior got the win.
