The owner of Joliet Cigar and Tobacco Corporation was arrested on charges of filing fraudulent sales tax returns, according to court records.

At close to 11:30 a.m. Monday, Mohamad N. Aoun, 46, of the 8500 block of South Menard Avenue in Burbank was arrested and booked into the Will County jail on 23 counts of filing fraudulent tax returns and one count of sales tax evasion.

The charges allege that Aoun, the owner of Joliet Cigar and Tobacco Corporation, was responsible for filing sales tax returns for the business and that he filed fraudulent sales tax returns by understating the total receipts reported in those returns.

Aoun owed the state more than $6,900 in taxes as a result of the scheme, according to court records.

The alleged fraud took place between Dec. 20, 2013 and Oct. 21, 2015. Joliet Cigar and Tobacco Corporation was incorporated on Oct. 29, 2013, and involuntary dissolved on March 11, 2016, according to state records.

Aoun is listed in state records as the principal agent and president of Joliet Cigar and Tobacco Corporation.

The Illinois Attorney General’s Office is prosecuting the case against Aoun. A warrant for Aoun’s arrest was signed on Dec. 13.

Aoun posted 10 percent of his $15,000 bond for his release.
