SPRINGFIELD – Plainfield South freshman Lexi Janiak turned in a dominating performance to win the 106-pound championship during the Illinois Wrestling Coaches and Officials Association Girls State Championship.
Janiak recorded four falls during the tournament and capped her big day with a pin 59 seconds into the title match against Larkin’s Gabriela Maldonado. She recorded falls in the opening moments of the second period of her semifinal and first-round matches and also had a fall in 46 seconds during the quarterfinals.
The only other area girls wrestler to finish in the final four at her weight was Coal City’s Carly Ford, who won with two pins and a major decision in her first three matches before being pinned in 1:40 by East Peoria’s Randi Robison in the 132-pound title match.
In the IWCOA Freshman-Sophomore Tournament at the same site, Lincoln-Way Central’s Conor Smetana was pinned in 4:45 of the title match at 113 by Edwardsville’s Austin Bauer. And Plainfield East’s Zachary Barlev finished in third at 285.
Other top finishers were Lockport’s Andrew Blackburn-Forst (fourth, 195), Tyler Bentley (fifth, 106), Nate Ramsey (fifth, 126) and Brandon Gamagami (eighth, 182), Lincoln-Way Central’s Andrew Hesse (fourth, 182) and Joey Malito (eighth, 101), Plainfield Central’s Mathieu Arsenault (fourth, 170), Plainfield North’s Jacob Macatangay (fourth, 106), Joliet West’s Terrance Snapp (fifth, 152), Joliet Catholic’s Logan Kuhel-Trimmer (sixth, 101) and Owen Gerdes (eighth, 138), Lincoln-Way East’s Anthony Urquijo (seventh, 145).
Lewis 25-25-25, NJIT 19-23-18: The No. 7 Flyers (16-4) won their ninth-straight match with a road win over New Jersey Institute of Technology. Leading Lewis were Ryan Coenen (11 kills), Tyler Mitchem (eight kills, .700 hitting), Mitch Perinar (eight digs), Michael Simmons (eight digs) and Matt Yoshimoto (30 assists).

Lincoln-Way West 9, Bradley-Bourbonnais 5: The Warriors got three goals from Delaney Janosek, while keeper Julia Mindy recorded 23 saves.
