A 12-year-old Joliet boy suffered a severe injury Monday after a “large firework” reportedly went off in his hand.

Joliet police and fire crews responded about 6:20 p.m. Monday to the 2200 block of Red Hawk Drive for a boy who severely injured his hand, Joliet police Sgt. Christopher Botzum said.

“It appears at this time to be an accident involving an unknown type of firework,” Botzum said. “This is still an ongoing investigation.”

Fire officials took the boy to an area hospital, where a helicopter was requested, according to a post on the fire department’s Facebook page.
