Plainfield D. 202 elementary school students earned prizes in short story competition

District 202 elementary school students earned eight of the nine top prizes in the Plainfield Public Library’s annual Short Story Competition.

The short story competition is open to fourth through sixth grade students. The young authors had to write an original story in 500 to 600 words. Students from District 202 and other area schools submitted 84 entries in all.

The Plainfield Public Library held a finale on March 2 for all competition participants. Author Kate Hannigan judged this year’s event. The winning District 202 students, and their stories, are:

• 1st – "Detective Dan and the Emerald Cat" by Natalie Abbott – Wesmere Elementary

• 2nd – "When Imagination Runs Wild" by Hailey Cudal – Eichelberger Elementary
Fifth Grade

• 1st – "The Superior Storm" by Alexandra “Lexie” Tsikouris – Freedom Elementary

• 2nd –"The Story of Lakesworth" by Sean Salkas – River View Elementary

3rd – "The Adventures of Super-Pig" by Caiden Swanson – River View Elementary
Sixth Grade

• 1st – "The White Wolf, by Amileah Bautista" – Ira Jones Middle School

• 2nd – "Father, by Anna Schoettmer" – Drauden Point Middle School

• 3rd – "The Intruder, by Connor Orr" – John F. Kennedy Middle School
