A Mokena man "involved in a structure fire" Saturday died in the emergency room, according to the Will County Coroner's Office.
John L. McGrath, 68, was pronounced deceased at Silver Cross Hospital in New Lenox about 11:15 a.m. Saturday, the coroner's office said.
Mokena Police Chief Stave Vaccaro said the fire remains under investigation but it appears the blaze started accidentally.
"There's no indication of foul play," Vaccaro said. "At this point it appears accidental."
McGrath was "involved" in the fire at his home on First Street just west of Wolf Road. A firefighter working Sunday said the call came in about 10:15 a.m. Saturday.
McGrath's single-story, brick apartment was boarded up Sunday morning and the screen door was propped open with a concrete block.
No one answered the door at neighboring units in the apartment complex.
Mokena Fire Department's Station 1 is only about a quarter mile from the McGrath's apartment.
The Mokena Police Department and the Office of the Illinois Fire Marshal are investigating the blaze, according to the coroner's office.
Vaccaro referred questions about the circumstances surrounding how the fire started to the state fire marshal's office. Personnel at the fire marshal's office failed to return a call seeking further information on the fire Sunday.
An autopsy was scheduled for Sunday, according to the coroner's office.
