Illinois State Police are investigating a roadside crash that sent a Gardner man to the hospital with serious injuries.
Tow truck driver Ryan McGrail was working outside his truck at 9:57 p.m. Sunday, assisting another motorist on the right shoulder of Interstate 55 when a 2009 Nissan Altima, driven by Cleveland Powell, 53, of Dwight crossed into the shoulder and struck the truck and McGrail, according to a news release from state police.
Illinois State Police responded to the scene. McGrail was taken first to Morris Hospital, then airlifted to Loyola University Medical Center in serious condition. Powell and two passengers in the tow truck did not report injuries at the scene, state police said.
Powell was charged with failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident, improper lane usage and failure to yield to emergency vehicles in accordance with Scott’s Law.
Illinois State Police recently put out a public service announcement in an effort to raise awareness about Scott’s Law. Sixteen state police squad cars were struck within the first three months of 2019, the statement said.
