Report: Semitrailer driver thought he could pass under viaduct in Joliet

The driver of a semitrailer that was stuck underneath a viaduct in Joliet allegedly told police he thought he could pass through because he saw another semitrailer go through, according to a traffic crash report.

Willie E. Hunter, 61, of Wichita, Kansas was the driver of a semitrailer that unsuccessfully tried to pass underneath the viaduct at Richards and Washington streets.

Metra trains run above the viaduct that is near Joliet Central High School.

The incident occurred about 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, according to a traffic crash report. No injuries were reported.

Hunter allegedly told Joliet police that he saw another semitrailer with a container pass through the intersection of Richards and Washington streets and successfully went underneath the viaduct.

Hunter’s semitrailer was more than
13 feet tall. He tried to drive it under the 11-foot viaduct, the report said.

A section of the roof of the vehicle’s trailer was shredded. Hunter was cited for blocking a roadway.
