Truck stop planned for Jefferson Street in Joliet

Informational meeting on project planned for Thursday

A Speedway gas station/truck stop is planned for the intersection of Jefferson Street and Houbolt Road.

Speedway will hold an informational meeting about their plans with nearby residents and businesses at 7 p.m. Thursday in the Universalist Unitarian Church on the site.

The church located on the northwest corner of the intersection would apparently be replaced by the gas station/truck stop if the plan moves forward.

Speedway needs approval from the city of Joliet for its plans, which go to both the Zoning Board of Appeals and Plan Commission on July 18 for consideration. The zoning board meets at 2 p.m. and the Plan Commission meets at 4 p.m.

Neighbor Joe Mikuska said he is preparing a list of questions to ask at the Thursday meeting.

“Six lots will abut this project. One of them is my house,” Mikuska said.

Mikuska lives in The Cloister, a gated subdivision at the north end of Houbolt where five homes were built but 37 lots remain to be developed. Mikuska said he was the last to buy a house in the subdivision and is concerned the Speedway could discourage further development, at least at the lots next to the gas station.

“From what I understand, it’s going to be a 24-hour operation,” he said. “Usually, when they have these truck stops, they are open 24 hours.”

The Speedway would be located across Houbolt from the Rock Run Center strip mall that includes Johnny’s Beef & Gyros restaurant.

A site plan sent to neighbors by the developer indicates truck and car driveways to the Speedway on Houbolt as well as driveways on Jefferson Street.
