Joliet-area artists: Cork Wine Bar wants to display your art.
“I have a lot of friends that are artists,” Kala Saunders, manager of the Joliet bar, said. “And they seem to have trouble finding places to show and sell their art where they are not charged.”
So Saunders decided to “load our walls with artwork from local artists at no charge to them,” she said.
“We don’t make money off their art,” Saunders said. “They’re able to show their art and talk about it. It’s just a nice intimate atmosphere for people.”
Cork Wine Bar created a dedicated space for the artist of the month. When the month is up, the featured artist may take the work home or move it to another area of the bar (as long as space is available) to continue exhibiting and selling until the artwork is gone, Saunders said.
The first artist was Tracey Danet of Joliet. She paints on canvas with watercolors and acrylics on canvas, Saunders said.
Danet's first reception on Sept. 8 event ("Mimosas, Bellinis, and Art") attracted 30 attendees and went so well, Cork Wine Bar is hosting Danet again on Sunday.
“She brought eight pieces and sold six,” Saunders said. “She is bringing more to replace them.”
October’s artist is Brianna Sonnenam. She creates homemade, hand painted wood crafts and décor, Saunders said. Sonnenam’s reception is Oct. 20.
Joliet cafe is also friendly to local artists
For several years, Book and Bean Café in Joliet has offered wall space to local artists for two months at a time. The cafe also offers paint nights on a regular basis. The next one is 5:30 p.m. Sept. 23. Space is limited. The cost is $20.
Those interested must register at the cafe, located inside the Joliet Public Library at 3395 Black Road, Joliet. A $10 deposit is due at the time of registration. For more information, call 815-725-8859.
