LocalLit book spotlight: 'Southern Shorts' by Sue Mydliak of Joliet

A humorous collection of short stories revolving around two characters in a fictional town in Louisiana.
A humorous collection of short stories revolving around two characters in a fictional town in Louisiana.

I'm veering away from the serious and lofty this week in favor of the silly and lighthearted.

"Southern Shorts" by Sue Mydliak of Joliet is a book of humorous short stories about Charlese and her friends, who live in the fictional town of Dry Prong, Louisiana.

According to the book's description on Amazon, "not a day goes by that something just drives Charlese absolutely crazy, especially if it involves her neighbor Willodean Ferris."

It's this book I'll be reviewing in Tuesday's LocalLit newsletter.

I took a chance on this book because I've heard Mydliak read some of these stories live at open mic events at the Book and Bean Cafe in Joliet.

Between Mydliak's exaggerated twang for Charlese and Willodean, as well as her stage presence, usually has the audience laughing. I'll let you know if the book has the same effect.
