A 45-year-old man in Rockdale appeared to have accidentally shot himself in the leg with a revolver as he was taking it out of his pocket, police said.
Shortly after 11:15 p.m. Sunday, police officers responded to a report of a man who suffered a gunshot wound to the leg in the 500 block of Moen Avenue, said Rockdale Police Chief Robert Dykstra.
Dykstra said a Joliet police officer happened to be the area, heard the gunshot and found the 45-year-old man who was wounded.
The man was inside an apartment near 3rd Base Sports Bar Grill & Pizza at 508 Moen Avenue when the incident occurred, Dykstra said.
The man left the apartment and ran toward the bar to seek help after he apparently shot himself while taking a .38-caliber revolver out of his pocket, he said.
Before the man reached the bar, he was confronted by a Joliet police officer, Dykstra said.
One of the officers at the scene applied a tourniquet on the man, who lost consciousness at one point from blood loss, Dykstra said. He said the man is doing well after he was taken to a hospital.
Dykstra said the incident is an open investigation. He said police believe the shooting may have been accidental based on statements from witnesses and from the man himself.
