ROMEOVILLE – Lewis University’s 14th-ranked women’s volleyball team’s hopes of advancing in the NCAA Division II Tournament were dashed on Friday when they fell, 25-20, 25-19, 25-16, to Rockhurst in the NCAA Midwest Regional semifinals at Neil Carey Arena.
Coach Lorelee Smith’s Flyers (28-6) were the No. 1 seed in the eight-team tournament, while 19th-ranked Rockhurst (31-7) was seeded fifth. But the Hawks rallied to win the opening set and controlled the next two sets to advance to Saturday’s title match against No. 2 seed Hillsdale, who won, 3-1, over Michigan Tech in the other semifinal.
Lewis, which had won 12 of its past 14 matches, was led by Colleen Wilhelm (11 kills), Mikah Freppon (12 assists), Haley Sobieralski (10 assists, nine digs), Alexandra Preuss (11 digs), Ronni Katarzynski (nine digs) and Jamie Poppen (nine digs).
Bolingbrook 85, Lincoln-Way West 59: Kai Evans (31 points, six rebounds), Darius Burford (19 points, six rebounds) and Donaven Younger (10 points, six rebounds) led the Raiders (3-1) to the road win.
Coal City 103, Peotone 69: The Coalers passed the century mark after jumping out to a 34-16 lead after one quarter. Coal City leaders included Austin Pullara (27 points), Brady Crawford (20 points), Jack Bunton (14 points) and Tyson Spencer (12 points).
De La Salle 44, Providence Catholic 35 (OT): The Celtics dropped a tough one on the road as Joe Alfirevich (13 points) and Jack Ruddy (nine points, nine rebounds) led the way.
Plainfield North 66, Minooka 36: The Tigers breezed to a Southwest Prairie Conference victory, improving to 3-2 on the year.
Aurora Central Catholic 62, Joliet Catholic Academy 55: The Hilltoppers were led by Christian Young (16 points), Conor Sukel (13 points) and Ja’Arie Mack (10 points).
Bradley-Bourbonnais 49, Lockport 48: The Porters were edged on a last-second shot by the hosts. Jake Kaczmarek scored all 17 of his points in the second half, while Tommy Ferriter added 15 points.
Blue Island Eisenhower 79, Lemont 71: The Indians (4-2) dropped an overtime decision to their South Suburban Conference foe.
Andrew 51, Lincoln-Way East 43: The Griffins struggled to get the offense going in the loss.
Streator 56, Reed-Custer 33: The Comets had no double-digit scorers in an Illinois Central Eight Conference loss.
Jacob Heisner had nine points for Reed-Custer (2-4).
Joliet Central 53, Romeoville 25: Jalysa Stones (18 points), Ashanti Brown (eight points) and Joyce Tua-Link (eight points) led the Steelmen to the SPC East road victory.
Lockport goes 3-0 at Washington: The Porters beat Washington, 33-30; Oak Park-River Forest, 44-31; and Dakota, 47-15. Mario Herrera (220 pounds) won all three of his matches.
Lincoln-Way West goes 2-1: The Warriors beat Washington, 45-27, and Unity, 44-27, but fell, 35-32, to Oak Park-River Forest. Javen Estrada (138), Garrett Geigner (145) and Ian Swidergal (170) all went 3-0 on the day.
Lincoln-Way Central 44, Bradley-Bourbonnais 25: The Knights got pins from Dustin Kozlowski (152), Ryan Keane (160), Fabian Villasenor (182) and Andrew Hesse (195), while Justin Brauer (132) was a winner by technical fall.
St. Francis 81, Judson 28: The eighth-ranked Saints jumped out to a 22-2 lead after one quarter and rolled to a Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference road win Saturday. Leading the Saints (8-2, 6-0) were Lacey Gardner (13 points), Andriana Acosta (12 points, 10 rebounds), Rexesha Hollis (11 points) and Paige Gieseke (10 points).
Judson 67, St. Francis 65: The Saints (4-4, 2-3) were led by Jorden Thornton (15 points), Mitch Kwasigroch (13 points, six rebounds) and Cole Micek (13 points).
