ComEd gives Plainfield $74K rebate for LED streetlight program

Plainfield replaced 725 fixtures in 2019 for $20K annual savings

ComEd presented the village of Plainfield with check for $74,000 as part of a rebate program for using more energy-efficient LED lighting.
ComEd presented the village of Plainfield with check for $74,000 as part of a rebate program for using more energy-efficient LED lighting.

ComEd recently presented the village of Plainfield and Mayor Michael Collins with a check for more than $74,000 as part of its rebate program.

The money will be used to offset the cost of converting to LED lighting, according to a news release. Light-emitting diode, or LED, is one of today’s most energy-efficient and rapidly developing technologies, according to the U.S. Department of Energy.

“We strive to improve our energy efficiency by upgrading more streetlights each year and ComEd’s Energy Efficiency Program helps us achieve that goal,” Collins said when ComEd awarded the village a check, according to the release.

In 2019, the village replaced 725 light fixtures, resulting in an annual savings of more than $20,000.

The replacement of these fixtures is equivalent to:

• 574,531 pounds of carbon dioxide reduced annually

• 307 acres of trees planted annually

• 56 cars off the road annually

• 52 homes powered annually

Plainfield maintains 3,700 streetlights and since its LED streetlight replacement program began nine years ago, almost half of the village’s streetlights have been replaced.

This has reduced the village’s electrical costs by more than 25%, the release said.

LED lights have improved visibility at night and reduced long-term costs, according to the village.
