After 34-plus years as Herald-News sports editor, I have gotten to know local athletes, coaches and officials pretty well.
I've been asked on occasion who some of my favorites are. That group is difficult to narrow down, there are so many. However, I can't help but think Mark Carlson, Ron Coomer, Mark Grant and Terry Gannon would be on my list.
Those who attended the quarterly meeting of the Old Timers Baseball Association of Will County on Monday night were treated to a question-and-answer session with Carlson, a Joliet West graduate who has been a major league umpire for more than 18 years, that could have gone on well into the night.
Carlson is on crutches, having had his knee scoped last Thursday. Yet, he honored his commitment, and the more than 100 who attended enjoyed the time he spent with them.
