5. Voters reject Holocaust denier
Residents of the 3rd Congressional District, which includes all or parts of Romeoville, Lockport, Crest Hill, Homer Glen and Lemont and extends to the southwest side of Chicago, soundly rejected Holocaust denier Arthur Jones.
Even before the results came in, Jones, who also is a former member of the American Nazi party, said the shooting of 11 people at a Pittsburgh synagogue hurt his chances. Granted, he was running in a solidly blue district against an incumbent with a lot of name recognition.
In Will County, U.S. Rep. Lipinski beat Jones by 21 points and by more than 6,000 votes. Almost 2 percent of the electorate, or 605 ballots as of election night, voted for write-in candidates.
