Senior Star at Weber Place in Romeoville has launched a new signature program specifically for its memory care residents – the Hen House.
Originating in Europe, chickens have been used to help dementia residents engage especially as they display 24 different vocalizations which can help reduce depression and anxiety.
Senior Star at Weber Place is piloting this program for the entire Senior Star corporate family throughout the United States with remarkable results.
Launched this past May, the Hen House program has proven to be quite successful among the residents providing these benefits:
• Creating a sense of purpose as residents help with daily care like feeding and collecting eggs.
Residents who are not able to actively participate in taking care of the chickens still experience tactile benefits of holding the eggs in their hands and touching feathers as they hold or pet the chickens.
• Sparking conversation and encouraging reminiscing as these therapy animals create the gift of gab among residents, staff, family and friends.
• Boosting health as residents experience increased socialization, improved well-being, enhanced family involvement and decreased anxiety and depression.
