Mother says she believes shooter targeted her son near parade route
Elian Raya said he didn’t notice he had been shot in his lower left leg after he heard several gunshots Saturday and ran inside the Gonzales Supermarket in Joliet.
The 16-year-old said he was at the store on Collins Street when he noticed a man on the street who pointed something at him. He wasn’t sure it was a gun, Raya said, and he didn’t get a good view of the man.
When he heard several gunshots, Raya said, he fled inside Gonzales Supermarket.
After about 10 seconds inside the store, he saw he was bleeding.
“I didn’t even notice. I just looked at my foot and saw blood,” Raya said.
Raya suffered a gunshot wound to his left calf. The bullet is lodged in his leg and doctors are wary about performing surgery to remove it because the procedure may cause nerve damage, said Raya’s mother, Mady Perez.
