Area roundup: Joliet Catholic girls volleyball team rolls to victory

The Joliet Catholic girls volleyball team had little trouble dispatching Marian Central Catholic on Tuesday in earning a 25-19, 26-24 win.

The Angels (10-5 overall, 1-1 East Suburban Catholic Conference) had a strong all-around attack led by Emily Surin (8 kills), Riley Hungate and Kristen Leuszler, who each had seven kills. Ryan Hinshaw had 18 assists and 12 digs.

Bolingbrook def. Lincoln-Way Central 25-27, 25-14, 25-12: Nicole Ramirez and Cait Rochon had 12 assists each for the Knights.

Minooka def. Lincoln-Way East 25-20, 25-23: Heidi Bonde had nine kills to power the Indians to a nonconference win.

Gardner-South Wilmington def. St. Anne 25-19, 25-18: Carson Halpin had seven kills in the Panthers River Valley Conference victory.


Joliet Township 173, Yorkville 195: Morgan Anderson and Maddy Palmer each shot rounds of 40 to pace Joliet to a dual meet victory at Blackberry Oaks.


Plainfield South 5, Romeoville 2: The Cougars got their offense going in a Southwest Prairie Conference victory.

Wheaton Academy 3, Lincoln-Way West 0: The Warriors dropped to 4-4 on the season with the nonconference loss.

Lincoln-Way Central 2, Herscher 0: Nick Willner and Jake Camaioni provided the offense as each scored goals for the Knights in a nonconference win.


Lincoln-Way East holds the top spot: The Griffins got all 17 first-place votes as they remained the No. 1 team in the Class 8A Associated Press poll.

Two other local teams earned votes in the 8A poll with Bolingbrook coming in at No. 6 and Minooka at No. 7.

In Class 6A, Providence climbed to the No. 3 ranking after its win against Brother Rice, while Joliet Catholic is ranked 10th in the 5A poll.

Coal City held its third position in the Class 4A poll and Peotone popped into the Top 10 at No. 10. Wilmington stayed in the No. 2 position in the Class 3A poll garnering five first-place votes.

Mount Carmel (Class 7A), Cary-Grove (6A), East St. Louis (5A), IC Catholic (4A), Williamsville (3A), GCMS (Class 2A) and Forreston (Class 1A) were the other No. 1’s.
