A member of the Joliet Township High School District Board announced she is running to represent the 49th District in the Illinois Senate.
Meg Loughran Cappel, a special education teacher who was elected to the JTHS board in 2017, is running as a Democrat for the open seat in 2020. State Sen. Jennifer Bertino-Tarrant, D-Shorewood, who currently holds the seat, has said she’ll be running for Will County executive next year.
“As a mother, school board member, teacher and local business owner I understand the challenges our communities face when it comes to high property taxes, equity in our educational system and access to quality, affordable health care,” Loughran Cappel said in a news release. “My goal in Springfield will be to give a voice to the 49th District’s constituents.”
Loughran Cappel is also a member and former union representative of American Federation of Teachers Local 604, a part of the Sunday morning teaching team at Legacy Vineyard Community Church and a member of the Shorewood Chamber of Commerce. She’s lived in Joliet since the age of 5 and has a husband and three children.
The 49th District is primarily in Will County and includes all or parts of Channahon, Crest Hill, Joliet, Plainfield, Romeoville and Shorewood.
Thomas Scott McCullagh, a Shorewood Republican, also is running for the seat in 2020.
