Lincoln-Way Central High School went on a brief soft lockdown Thursday morning in response to a report of a man at a nearby forest preserve who appeared armed but actually wasn’t, according to the Will County Sheriff’s Office.
A resident who was passing by the Hickory Creek Preserve next to Lincoln-Way Central High School observed a man walking with what was believed to be a weapon, said sheriff spokeswoman Kathy Hoffmeyer.
New Lenox police and deputies were sent to the scene and the school went on soft lockdown as a precaution, Hoffmeyer said.
“Police spoke with the man who was out for a walk. It was determined that the report was unfounded,” Hoffmeyer said.
The soft lockdown lasted less than five minutes, she said.
Central school officials said on Facebook that the school was in “soft lockdown for minutes until the concern was resolved.”
“The safety and well-being of our students is our top priority. We appreciate the Will County Sheriff’s Department for their quick response,” school officials said.
