The Will County Health Department announced 20 new confirmed cases of COVID-19 and one death in the county on Wednesday.

The addition brings the total number of COVID-19 patients in Will County to 50 confirmed cases and two deaths.

The increase of 20 cases is significant as over the last several days, the health department has announced only a few confirmed cases each day.

Health department spokesman Steve Brandy said he had no specific reason why Will County saw such a spike in cases Wednesday. He pointed to national news reports indicating there was more testing for the virus available, which could account for significant increases across the country.

"More testing is happening so more positive are going to come about," Brandy said.

He added that while he didn't have information on the age ranges of the new patients, he said Wednesday's new cases involved seven men and 12 women and one of unknown gender.

Brandy reiterated the confirmed cases were found all over the county. He added that to his knowledge, the majority of COVID-19 patients in Will County had some sort of additional underlying health condition.

"It's a fluid situation and it could change day by day," Brandy said. "It is all over the county."

The Illinois Department of Public Health reported 1,865 total cases of the virus and 19 deaths as of Wednesday throughout the state.
