A man died after a two-vehicle crash on Independence Boulevard in Romeoville on Monday. Part of the major roadway was closed for several hours afterward.

A two-vehicle crash killed a man in Romeoville around midday Monday and caused part of Route 53, also known as Independence Boulevard, to be closed off.

Shortly after noon, the Romeoville Police Department responded to the area of Independence Boulevard and Material Road for the crash, according to a department news release.

A Kenilworth semitrailer was traveling north on Independence Boulevard and collided with a maroon Nissan that was traveling south. The vehicles collided near the intersection.

The driver of the Nissan, Kevin Lawlor, 47, of Romeoville was killed in crash and pronounced dead at the scene, according to the police press release. The driver of the truck suffered minor injuries.

That section of Independence Boulevard was closed between Taylor Road and Murphy Drive for several hours into the late afternoon. The village sent out an alert about 4:30 p.m. saying the section of roadway remained closed because of the crash.

Romeoville police also reported on its Twitter page that there was a power failure in the Hamrick Avenue area, possibly related to the crash. An RPD tweet Monday said ComEd was on the scene.

The Romeoville Police Traffic Unit is investigating the crash.
