Will the Joliet city manager office be vacant on Aug. 7?

Don't ask me how the city solves its city manager problem.

From the City Council members I've talked with, I don't think they know either.

It will be interesting to see what happens on Aug. 7, which is next Friday, if Steve Jones leaves on schedule, as he says he will, and no one has been chosen to step into the office.

From what I heard this week as local attorney Michael Hansen decided against taking the job, the council hasn't prepared for the prospect of a vacant city manager's office.

This may be something to consider discussing when they gather Friday for the next special meeting on the subject of what might be called: Who the hell will take this job that five of us want to take it?

Hansen was the second person supposedly willing to become interim city manager and reportedly having support from at least five members of the council needed for approval before deciding against it. The other, if your memory is blurred from last week, was interim City Attorney Sabrina Spano.

What if no one takes it by Aug. 7?

City Clerk Christa Desiderio has filled in for Jones when he's taken days off.

So, maybe Desiderio can fill in as – shall we call it acting interim city manager?

But what if she declines?

Will the mayor and council then be in the position of looking for an acting interim city manager who will step in until they can find an interim city manager to fill in until they can find a permanent city manager?

No way to protest?

The Eric Lurry protest march on Sunday co-existed with passing traffic as it went from Six Corners to the intersection of Larkin Avenue and Jefferson Street.

One objector to the proceedings is Clyde McLemore, who heads Black Lives Matter in Lake County and has joined the cause.

McLemore is fond of emphasizing that protests "shut sh-- down," although he rephrased that at a City Council meeting on Tuesday when Mayor Bob O'Dekirk asked him to watch his language.

Noting that police walked with the protesters and controlled traffic along the way, McLemore said in a somewhat incredulous manner, "The police led the march."

The police, after all, are the object of the protest.

"You're all supposed to stop the traffic out there. That what a protest is," McLemore said. "You're supposed to shut down."

McLemore argued that police put protesters in danger by letting vehicles pass by, noting that drivers have been hitting protesters with vehicles across the country since May.

What's in a name?

NorthPoint Development has a new name for what it was calling the Compass Business Park.

Now it's the Compass Global Logistics Hub.

I'm sure NorthPoint loves the idea of becoming a global logistics hub.

I'm sure a lot of the locals shudder a bit to think about it.
