A woman was charged with attempted murder in connection with the shooting of her husband in Joliet, police said.
The 55-year-old husband of Denise O’Malley, 55, had been watching a Chicago Bears football game on Sunday in his residence in the 1900 block of Brighton Lane when he saw his wife with a gun, said Will County Assistant State’s Attorney Katie Rabenda.
O’Malley shot him but he was able to run to a neighbor’s house and he received aid from neighbors, Rabenda said. He identified O’Malley as the shooter and indicated she has mental health issues, she said.
O’Malley told the police she caught her husband having an affair last November and that it led to their relationship declining, Rabenda said.
O’Malley faces charges of attempted first-degree murder, two counts of aggravated battery with a firearm and aggravated domestic battery.
Joliet police said O’Malley’s husband suffered gunshot wounds to the chest and leg. Rabenda said the gunshot wound to the chest damaged his lung.
Emergency crews with the Joliet Fire Department took the victim to AMITA Health Saint Joseph Medical Center in Joliet.
Rabenda requested a $1 million bond for O’Malley after arguing she posed a danger to her husband and to the community. She said O’Malley has no criminal history.
Judge Brian Barrett set O’Malley’s bond at $750,000. She will need to post $75,000 for her release from jail. Barrett ordered her to have no contact with her husband or the residence on Brighton Lane.
Officers responded to the incident about 3:15 p.m. and found the victim in the front yard of a residence being treated by neighbors, police said.
After he said his wife shot him, he said she was still in the residence, police said.
Officers surrounded the house and ordered O’Malley to exit the residence, police said. She came out of the residence a short time later and was arrested.
Officers searched the residence and found a firearm believed to have been used in the incident, police said.
Joliet Fire Chief Greg Blaskey said the Brighton Lane residence is within Joliet but has a Plainfield mailing address.
