3 things to know about becoming an esthetician

Are you considering a career in the beauty industry? If you are passionate about skincare, beauty, and health, enrolling in an esthetics program could be the right choice for you. Here are three things to know about becoming a successful esthetician:

1. Choose the right esthetics school

Kathe Malinowski, lead esthetician and marketing manager for Eterna MedSpa & Laser Vein Center, recommends finding a school that offers extensive preparation and hands-on experience.

“A school that is going to give you a well-rounded education,” she said. “Not only the anatomy of the skin but also laser treatments, medical-grade peels, micro-needling, microcurrent facials, etc.”

2. Do your own research

Once you’ve narrowed down the schools you are considering, pay them a visit.

“Go and interview the schools you want to attend,” Malinowski said.

And make sure to ask specific questions about the education they offer, the skills and techniques are covered in the program, whether they are a fully accredited esthetician training school, the tuition costs, length of the program, and more.

“Once you’ve completed your research, compare them all and then make your decision,” Malinowski said.

3. Go by the book

“The best text that the majority of estheticians have learned from is the Milady Standard Esthetics Fundamentals,” Malinowski said.

That’s because the industry-standard resource offers a complete overview of all of the information necessary to introduce a newcomer to the world of professional skincare. Just some of the topics covered include anatomy and physiology, disorders of the skin, skin treatments, products, chemistry and chemical safety, and more.
