You’ve gotten the engagement ring of your dreams. Now the search begins for a wedding band. Theresa Murphy, owner of the Joliet-based Newstar Jewelers, offers these three tips for choosing a wedding band you will love:
1. Start the search early
Don’t wait until the last minute to choose the ring you’ll wear for a lifetime.
“You should start looking for bands at least six months before your wedding,” Murphy said. “Especially if you want a custom made band or if it needs to be ordered from the company to match the engagement ring.”
2. Bring your engagement ring while shopping
When choosing a wedding band, the classic option is a band that fits perfectly along one side of the engagement ring. Some choose two bands, one on either side.
“They can either match the engagement ring or have a different design that compliments it,” Murphy said. “These days, some ladies choose to go with bands that don’t match — more of a stackable, whimsical look. The most important thing is to not overpower the engagement ring — that is what should stand out.”
3. Don’t fret about matching
Wondering if your wedding band needs to match your spouse’s? If you have different preferences, no worries.
“Most couples don’t ask for matching bands,” Murphy said. “They may stay with the same color metals, but they don’t match exactly. We have a great company for bands that use precious metals and contemporary metals along with other mediums like meteorite, wood, dinosaur bone, carbon fiber, just to name a few. You can create your own band — guys love it. We have had some women order a matching band, just slightly narrower.”
